A new way to see the world
At gapyear.com we like to keep you up-to-date with everything that's going on in the world. That's why we present to you 'Project Glass', Google's new augmented reality glasses. We think it could change the face of travelling (literally - you heard it here first).
The glasses have a little microscreen over the right eye that allows you to use augmented reality to integrate Google's add-ons, such as Google maps, video calls and their social network G+.
The early concept designs show wire-framed glasses with a display above the right eye which shows off personal schedules and location-based information. Also included is a camera, a microphone for calls and voice recognition, a GPS, and (presumably) a wireless connector to make the whole thing work.
A statement by Google X, the company's experimental lab, said: "We think technology should work for you - to be there when you need it and get out of your way when you don't.
"A group of us from Google[x] started Project Glass to build this kind of technology, one that helps you explore and share your world, putting you back in the moment. We're sharing this information now because we want to start a conversation and learn from your valuable input. So we took a few design photos to show what this technology could look like and created a video to demonstrate what it might enable you to do.
"Please follow along as we share some of our ideas and stories. We'd love to hear yours, too. What would you like to see from Project Glass?"
Google, being Google, have put together a video to show you exactly what the glasses could be like:
The video suggests icons offering 14 different services will be offered to the user when the glasses are first put on, including information about the weather, their location and diary appointments.
It appears that several of these services are either triggered by an action taken by the user or the situation they are in.
According to the New York Times, it had previously suggested that the first set of glasses would go on sale before the end of the year for somewhere between US$250-US$600 (£157-£378), but experts say that the technology shown in the video may still be some way off being ready for market.
The implications these glasses could have on travelling are untold - they really could be a new way to see the world...
